Autism Specialist Services

Picture
One in 68 children have been identified as having Autism Spectrum Disorder, or ASD. When you consider the size of your school population, it is inevitable that you will have learners with ASD.  Two-thirds of individuals with Autism have average to above average intellect.  How does this show up in the classroom?  Educators often describe these students as “quirky”, inflexible, or rigid. Finding effective ways to instruct these learners can be baffling to teachers, especially because some traditional methods of instruction might actually increase their barriers to success.  In thinking about your student population, how many students in your school might have ASD and be undiagnosed ? We bet you can name a few.  Often these learners struggle with group work, writing, generalizing rules, and social interactions. If your teachers struggle with learners who have barriers in social communication and social interaction, Kim and her team can share some effective and easy classroom adjustments that will require minimal effort, reduce or eliminate maladaptive behavior, and will prove beneficial for other learners. These strategies for students with Autism Spectrum Disorders are not only established evidence based approaches, but these approaches WILL maximize the learning of second language learners and learners with barriers related to attention, focus, and anxiety.

Is your school considering or planning to expand practices in inclusive education? Do your current families have learners with Autism who might benefit from being included in your school? If so, we can help you establish some formal systems of support that will guide you in this process. Beginning with formal assessment, the team can help you identify the presence of ASD, prioritize measurable individualized goals, and assist with formulating a road map for potential admission. Kim’s multidisciplinary team can provide “real life” models and artifacts that will assist teachers in optimally preparing for learners with ASD.   The following are examples of services we can personalize for your school.

Professional learning opportunities include experiential activities, actual case studies, video modeling of skills, exemplar behavior plans, lesson plans, and data collection/progress monitoring  tools.
